In yet another sign he is operating under the assumption the Kings are leaving, Mayor Kevin Johnson told reporters today that he has arranged to speak with the former mayor of Charlotte, N.C., about how that city dealt with losing an NBA franchise – then getting a team back.

City Beat: Sacramento arena study moving forward, despite Kings news

Despite television news reports to the contrary, the city-sponsored development team looking at the financial feasibility of building a new arena in town has not stopped working amid the Kings’ uncertain future here.

Kings move to Anaheim looking more likely, mayor says

Sacramento now is no more than Plan B for the Sacramento Kings.



Anaheim’s Honda Center is newer and fancier than Power Balance Pavilion. Sacramento is a mid-sized market with an old arena, says Mayor Kevin Johnson, and the Kings owners need to do what works best for them. “Even if our team is selling out,” he says, ” … it’s hard economically to compete.”

Kings ask NBA for more time to explore relocation

The Sacramento Kings may not have a deal yet to move to Anaheim, but they’re clearly exploring that option.



Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson said of the Kings’ request for an extension: “This means one thing. They are trying to cut a deal to leave.”



The city of Anaheim owns the Honda Center. Built in 1993, it is only marginally larger than Arco Arena but is considered much nicer.



Billionaire Henry Samueli, operator of the Honda Center, is seen as a risk-taker.

Mayor says he wants to keep the Kings in town but will not ‘be leveraged’

With a possible do-or-die deadline looming next week, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson said Tuesday he will do everything he can to keep the Sacramento Kings from leaving town, at least to a point.



Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson has increased the cost of security by having personal guards for more hours a week.
