Kings Fans Fundraising Effort: HereWeBuild

Friday, April 1st, 2011

A new grassroots effort, called #HereWeBuild, in Sacramento to support the construction of a new arena, with or without the Kings, was started yesterday after Anaheim officials approved a $75million in bonds to lure the Kings. @CarmichaelDave began collecting pledges, and by midnight around $100,000 had come in. It didn’t take long for that amount to double and now we’re looking in the neighborhood of a quarter of a million dollars!

Some big names have donated and some local businesses have helped out the cause considerably. For example, @JiffyLube pledged $25,000 (+donations =$30,500) and provided space on several digital billboards to display messages supporting the cause, including, “All things start somewhere…”

Please support the #HereWeBuild movement. Here are a few ways:

City Beat: Business, labor groups enter Kings arena battle

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Business and labor leaders are beginning to amp up pressure to build a new sports arena in Sacramento and to keep the Kings in town.

A worker removes letters for what has been the name of the Kings’ Sacramento homes since the NBA franchise came to town in 1985. The new name, Power Balance Pavilion, after a company that makes a sports wristband that purportedly helps an athlete’s performance, is to become official March 1. Maloof Sports and Entertainment, which owns the team and the building, hasn’t decided what to do with the Arco Arena lettering from the four sides of the building. Selling the rights to an arena’s name was almost unknown when the Kings first arrived and played in a 10,333-seat building that was replaced by the current 17,300-seat Kings arena in 1988. The old deal with Arco was for $750,000 per year. The financial details of the new name have not been disclosed.

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Maybe the Kings leave Sacramento or maybe they don’t. No one outside the tight family circle of Kings owners knows for sure. But there is something that is certain and that Sacramento can control:
